Welcome back to the Grimgard Chronicles, where this week we'll be introducing the second of our three (anti) heroes: Malus Brimborn! If you didn't catch our last article about his twin sister Khailagora, you can find that post here!
Now that you're all caught up, let's begin!
Malus had always been a troubled child. War and strife were ever a part of the Mortal Realms, and though he was a capable combatant, he was an outlier amongst his family. His twin sister, Khailagora, had shown aptitude and talent weaving the winds of magic, and Malus had always begrudged her for it. As the "less favored" of the twins, Malus often acted out in defiance and caused trouble whenever he could. Some said it was merely attention-seeking, but others sensed a truly dark purpose behind his actions, and thus nearly any misfortune the family had suffered, there were those quick to blame the rebellious Malus as the source of their pain.
While Khailagora was sent off to the Academy of Anvilgard for her magical training, Malus had chosen to abandon his family entirely (likely before they could do the same to him). He instead packed up what little he had and turned to sea. It didn't take him long to join a band of aelves who sailed the green waters of Aqshy in their wolfships, and Malus quickly proved himself as an asset to whoever he chose to sail under. A ruthless killer, capable seaman, and an intimidating factor in negotiations, Malus was valued at last, and within a few short centuries, found himself captain of the Black Ark Malerion's Dread.
Before long, his sights were set on an ambitious task: intercepting a shipment of precious realmstone from an Anvilgard vessel. Malus had to know precisely where and when the ship would be most vulnerable, which was a tricky enough task — and Malus knew there was only one way for him to gain that information. He knew he had to seek out the help of his sister Khailagora.
The reunion was long in the making. The siblings had not seen one another for hundreds of years by this time, and Khailagora was skeptical at best of Malus' intentions. Malus had fed her a story — many lies, and many truths, promising the realmstone was his way out of a life of piracy and into an honorable life. Promising no one would be killed. Khailagora bent, and surrendered the information Malus needed to secure the realmstone.
The raid was swift and deadly. Anvilgard soldiers slaughtered to the man, protecting their precious cargo. The ship had been taken, and the realmstone in Malus' possession. Before he could celebrate, however, a Dreadlord upon the back of an enormous Black Dragon swooped down from the skies, raining acid-breath upon the privateers. Malus' leg was destroyed beyond repair. The few pirates that lived were taken back to Anvilgard to face trial, and Malus was sentenced to hard labor digging the winding tunnels below the City of Scales. For her role in the raid, Khailagora was dismissed from her military service. She was devastated.
Though the twins were separated once again, they would be drawn back together in the attack on Anvilgard, lead by the Daughters of Khaine — religious zealots serving the goddess Morathi. Thankfully for Khailagora and Malus, there was yet another hero who would be joining their side: a general of the Freeguild armies named Vekhora Fellhand.
